\n\n\n\nYou’ll likely know White for his music, both in The White Stripes in the noughties and then as a solo artist, producer and head of his Third Man Records label thereafter. Indeed, this new exhibition in London is the first to show his visual art practice in a formal gallery setting. The scope is broad, from sculptures made with found objects and furniture design to interactive works and installations; the inspiration is, in many ways, devoutly local to Detroit, his hometown, the city’s Cass Corridor neighbourhood and the associated art movement that emerged from it in the 1970s, around which White was raised. Parked up in the predictably luminescent cafe of Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, White spoke with Forsyth and Pollard, artists and filmmakers in their own right, for whom music plays a pivotal role in their work, counting Scott Walker, Jarvis Cocker and Gil Scott-Heron among many other collaborators.
