There, taking inspiration from the cool modernism of the West coast light and architecture, he produced what would remain some of his most iconic works. Most of all <em>A Bigger Splash </em>(1967), in which we see a modern villa across a swimming pool, is devoid of figures, the human presence given by the splash made below a diving board. </p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-1230x1220.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-123216\" srcset=\"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-1230x1220.jpg 1230w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-600x595.jpg 600w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-300x298.jpg 300w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-768x762.jpg 768w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708-1536x1524.jpg 1536w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/67A34_0932.20251213002030708.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1230px) 100vw, 1230px\" /><figcaption><em>A Bigger Splash</em>, 1967, acrylic on canvas, 243 x 244 cm. © David Hockney. Hockney’s 1972 work <em>Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)</em> went on the become the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction, <a href=\"https://artreview.com/news-16-nov-18-hockney-breaks-record-for-living-artist/\">making £70 million in 2018</a>.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, living in the Hollywood Hills, Hockney turned to photo collage as a medium, marking the beginning of his embrace of new technology, experimenting with early computers to make work. He went on use Photoshop in the 1990s and then made a series pf iPad paintings after the turn of the millennium. By then he was spending more time back in his native Yorkshire, and as well as painting <em>en plein air </em>on canvas, he used the the computer screen to capture the landscape in verdant expressionistic strokes that belied the medium. </p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-1230x843.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-123218\" srcset=\"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-1230x843.jpg 1230w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-600x411.jpg 600w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-300x206.jpg 300w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-768x526.jpg 768w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35-1536x1053.jpg 1536w, https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/S35.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1230px) 100vw, 1230px\" /><figcaption><em>Pearblossom Hwy., 11-18th April 1986 (Second Version)</em>, photographic collage, 182 x 272 cm. © David Hockney.
