The 2027 edition of the Helsinki Biennial, curated by Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller, will be titled Unknowns.

\n\n\n\n

The biennial will feature around 45 artists and groups, and tackle the concept of the unknown from a variety of perspectives including physical science, astronomy, geology, spirituality, mythology, and abstraction.

\n\n\n\n

‘For Unknowns, we have invited artists who expand the limits of what we think we know, while making us conscious of how deeply we belong to one another, as fellow living beings. We share an irrepressible enthusiasm to encounter these as-yet-unknown works, and to see the biennial itself take shape. We place great hope in the joy and force art carries – its power to renew our energy to imagine the future,’ Kataoka and Miller said in a statement.

The first list of announced artists is as follows: Ari Bayuaji, Tara Donovan, Laurent Grasso, Marguerite Humeau, Matias Karsikas, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Ragnhild May, Yoshitomo Nara, Josefina Nelimarkka, Tawatchai Puntusawasdi, Anna Retulainen, and Jakob Kudsk Steensen.

Helsinki Biennial 2027 will take place from 6 June to 19 September, across Vallisaari Island, Esplanade Park and Helsinki Art Museum (HAM).
