We do so in acknowledgment of our Statement of Intention issued on 22 April 2026.’</p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement of intention cited relates to the <a href=\"https://artreview.com/venice-golden-lion-jury-wont-consider-russia-and-israel/\">decision</a> to exclude from Golden and Silver Lion competition participating ‘countries whose leaders are currently charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court’ –&nbsp;which, effectively, singles out Russia and Israel. </p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury is presided over by Solange Oliveira Farkas, the founder and artistic director of Associao Cultural Videobrasil, and features Zoe Butt, curator and founder of in-tangible institute and artistic director of deCentral, both in Chiang Mai; Elvira Dyangani Ose, curator and artistic director of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial; Marta Kuzma, curator and professor at the Yale School of Art; and Giovanna Zapperi, art historian, and professor at the University of Geneva.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>All members signed the statement. </p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the resignations, the Biennale organisers announced that the competition award ceremony, previously scheduled for 9 May, has been postponed to 22 November –&nbsp;the closing day of the biennale. </p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a U-turn from the jury’s previous <a href=\"https://artreview.com/venice-golden-lion-jury-wont-consider-russia-and-israel/\">decision</a> – to discount ‘countries whose leaders are currently charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court’ – all national pavilions will once more be eligible and subject to a public vote of ‘ticket holders who have visited both exhibition venues during the opening period’. </p>\n\n\n\n<p>‘This is consistent with the founding spirit of La Biennale, based on openness, dialogue, and the rejection of any form of closure or censorship,’ an <a href=\"https://www.labiennale.org/en/news/two-visitors%E2%80%99-lions-have-been-established-biennale-arte-2026\">official press release</a> stated. </p>\n","path":"/venice-biennale-2026-international-jury-resigns/","format":"standard","date":"30 April 2026","rawDate":"2026-04-30T16:17:19.000Z","branch":{"name":"artreview.com"},"author":{"name":"ArtReview","path":"/author/artreview/"},"category":{"name":"News","path":"/category/news/"},"featured_media":{"source_url":"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/image-15.png","caption":"","alt_text":"","media_details":{"width":1200,"height":800,"sizes":{"thumbnail":{"source_url":"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/image-15-300x200.png","width":300,"height":200},"medium":{"source_url":"https://backend.artreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/image-15-600x400.png","width":600,"height":400},"large":null,"wordpress_1536x1536":null,"wordpress_2048x2048":null}}},"acf":{"article_artist":null,"article_video":null,"article_audio":null,"article_collaboration":"","article_custom_html_snippet":"","article_featured_title":"","article_featured_description":"","article_highlight":false,"article_custom_link_url":"","hero_image":null,"seo_title":"Venice Biennale 2026 International Jury resigns | ArtReview","seo_description":"The International Jury for the 61st Venice Biennale, scheduled to open on 9 May, has resigned.
