The 16th edition of the Gwangju Biennale – led by Ho Tzu Nyen with curators Che Kyongfa, Park Gahee and Brian Kuan Wood – will be titled You must change your life, the Gwangju Biennale Foundation has announced.

Taken from the last line of Raine Maria Rilke’s poem Archaic Torso of Apollo (1908), the theme will explore the transformative power of art in our time of multiple crises and urgencies.

The exhibition will feature the smallest number of artists in its history, deliberately privileging ‘intensity over accumulation’, and showcasing how individual artists’ practice change over time.

The Gwangju Biennale has announced selected commissions by Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork, Nam Hwayeon and Kwon Byungjun and Park Chan-kyong. Further information about commissions and participating artists will be announced in the coming months.

The 16th Gwangju Biennale will take place 5 September – 15 November.
