2022 Bangkok Art Biennale announces artists including Marina Abramović, Antony Gormley and Kimsooja [updated]

The exhibition is slated to open its third edition next October, under the title CHAOS : CALM

The full list of 73 participating artists and 12 venues have been announced for the upcoming edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale – scheduled to open on 22 October 2022 across various locations in the Thai capital.

The biennale’s artists will include: Marina Abramović, ART for AIR (representatives), Jake and Dinos Chapman, Jarasporn Chumsri, Tiffany Chung, Antony Gormley, Arthur Jafa, Jitish Kallat, Kimsooja, Rachel Kneebone, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nawin Nuthong, Be Takerng Pattanopas, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, Alwin Reamillo, Arin Rungjang, Pinaree Sanpitak, Chiharu Shiota, Wantanee Siripattananuntakul, Myrtille Tibayrenc, Uninspired by Current Events, Xu Zhen, and Kennedy Yanko. ‘Art is a path of hope in this chaotic world. We hope to find happiness and power through art at the Bangkok Art Biennale,’ Abramović said in a statement.

The biennale’s venues are spread across the city, including: Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Wat Prayoon (Temple of Iron Fences) and Museum Siam: Discovery Museum. The biennale will also feature a ‘BAB Virtual Space’ to display digital artworks. The full list can be viewed here.

The curatorial team and theme for the biennale’s third edition were announced earlier this year. CHAOS : CALM looks ‘to reflect the unpredictable conditions that the world has endured over the past few years, from the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change and socio-political unrest’, organisers said. Its curatorial team is comprised of Biennale’s artistic director Apinan Poshyananda, art consultant Nigel Hurst, curator Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani, director of Gallery VER Jirat Ratthawongjirakul and founder of Bangkok’s Mysterious Ordinary, Chomwan Weeraworawit.
