Andrew da Conceicao, one of the founders of South African gallery Stevenson, has died.
Alongside Michael Stevenson and Kathy Grundlingh, da Conceicao opened the gallery in Cape Town in 2003, and it has since expanded to Johannesburg and Amsterdam. Representing the likes of Wim Botha, Penny Siopis, Robin Rhode and Meschac Gaba, it now has over thirty artists.
In a 2019 interview, da Conceicao recalled that their catalyst for establishing the gallery was a visit to Documenta in 2002, which was curated by Okwui Enwezor. ‘We looked at our local situation and wondered how it could be that Goodman was the only gallery, which took an interest in contemporary art in addition to the art of the twentieth century. We wanted to know why so many good artists are represented in Europe but not locally. So we wanted to change this.’
