Artists Andy Goldsworthy and Jenny Holzer are among the recipients of the Praemium Imperiale, awarded by the Japan Art Association.

Established in 1988 and presented annually in the name of the late Prince Takamatsu, each recipient receives a gold medal and 15 million yen (£70,000). Goldsworthy, known for his pioneering land art, ephemeral installations and ecology-inflected practice, was given the nod in the sculpture category, while Holzer, more commonly associated with her satirical commentary on capitalism through posters, electronic signs and light projections, fell under the prize’s historic painting category.

Architect Daniel Libeskind will also be travelling to Tokyo for the prize, while actress Cate Blanchett was recognised for her theatre and film work, and conductor Herbert Blomstedt was named in the music category.

The French organisation La Source Garouste has been chosen as the recipient of the 5 million Yen (£23,000) Grant for Young Artists.

Each year, nomination committees chaired by International Advisors submit candidate lists across five disciplines, the advisors including Lamberto Dini (former Prime Minister of Italy), Lord Patten of Barnes (former Chancellor of the University of Oxford), Prof. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann (former President of the Goethe-Institut), Jean-Pierre Raffarin (former Prime Minister of France) and Hillary Clinton (former U.S. Secretary of State). Fujisankei the the main underwriter of the prizes.
