The American photography non-profit, Aperture Foundation, is to have a new executive director. Sarah Meister is currently a photography curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the institution she has worked at since joining in 1996 as a curatorial assistant.
Her exhibitions there have included From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola (2015; as co-curator), Modern Photographs from the Thomas Walther Collection, 1909–1949 (2014–15; co-curator), Nicholas Nixon: Forty Years of The Brown Sisters (2014); Walker Evans American Photographs, 75th anniversary (2013–14), Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light (2013) and Eugène Atget: “Documents pour artistes” (2012).
Last year she curated Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures and she is currently working on a show of São Paulo’s Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB), Brazil’s preeminent amateur photo club, founded in 1939.
Lange was among the founders of Aperture in 1952, a group which also included Ansel Adams and Minor White. Meister replaces the outgoing Chris Boot who has directed the foundation since 2011, overseeing the organisation’s book publishing, magazine and exhibitions.
