Curator Cecilia Alemani names 213 artists for her show The Milk of Dreams
213 artists have been named for this year’s Venice Biennale, on view from 23 April to 27 November. The artists hail from 58 countries; 180 have never been featured in the biennale’s main exhibition before.
The 59th edition, curated by Cecilia Alemani, takes its title The Milk of Dreams from a book of drawings by the surrealist Leonora Carrington. The ‘transhistorical’ exhibition, which looks to ‘absorb the anxiety of the moment, but not in an illustrative way’, Alemani has promised, was postponed from its original date last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alemani said in a press conference: ‘The presence of a large number of female and gender non-confirming artists challenge the figure of men as the centre of the universe.’
