jiradej-pornpilai meemalai: BAAN NOORG, the team behind the artist-run initiative Baan Noorg, has been appointed artistic director of the fifth Thailand Biennale, which will take place in Rayong from December 2027 to April 2028, the Thai Ministry of Culture has announced. Emily Chin-Jie Lee, Gesyada Siregar and Tyuki Imamura have been appointed as curators.
The exhibition, titled Sin-Samudr, Turning Currents, will seek to explore the relationship between the local and the global as an evolving and interwoven process. The theme, on top of the biennial’s location, echoes the government’s efforts to transform Rayong ‘from an industrial city into an art city’.
Rayong is the capital of a province of the same name, one of three that form Thailand’s ‘Eastern Economic Corridor’: a national development project launched in 2017 aiming to drive industry and investment along the country’s eastern coast.
Baan Noorg’s recent activities include a contribution to Documenta 15, a three-part intertextual installation to accessibly trace Thai crises through the arts, featuring a dairy farm exchange-programme, displays of nang yai (Thai shadow puppetry) and a skateboard ramp.
