Axel Rüger has been appointed the Frick Collection’s next Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Director, the New York museum’s Board of Trustees announced. Rüger’s appointment follows the retirement of its long term director Ian Wardropper at the beginning of January this year.
Rüger will be joining the Frick from his current role as Secretary and Chief Executive at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Previously, he was director of Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum as well as its sister institution The Mesdag Collection in The Hague. From 1999 to 2006, he served as Curator of Dutch Paintings 1600–1800 at The National Gallery in London.
Currently relocated to Frick Madison due to a $290m upgrade to its historic buildings, the museum will return to its original location in early 2025.
Rüger will commence his role starting the spring of 2025.
