South Korea’s National Asian Culture Center (ACC) has named Ayoung Kim as the inaugural winner of its new biennial Future Prize, dedicated to recognising innovation in interdisciplinary arts. The award comprises KRW 300 million ($210,000), which Kim will use to create a commissioned work that occupies ACC Creation Space 1, an expansive 1,560 square-metre exhibition venue in Gwangju.
Currently based in Seoul, Kim’s practice involves video, moving image, VR, game simulation, sonic fiction, diagrams and texts, often employing futuristic iconographies to discuss biopolitics, memories, ancestral origins and imminent futures. In a press release, the judges stated that they chose Kim for her ‘distinctive approach, which skilfully weaves multi-layered visual elements into a complex and impactful narrative, finding it particularly compelling’.
Kim’s works are included in the collections of Tate in London, Frac Lorraine in Metz, Kadist Foundation in San Francisco, Sharjah Art Foundation, MMCA Seoul, Seoul Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and Joaquim Paiva Collection at Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro among others.
ACC Future Prize: Ayoung Kim will be presented at ACC Creation Space 1 from 30 August to 16 February, 2025.
