Christophe Cherix, curator of drawings and prints at MoMA, will be promoted to director, taking over the position from Glen Lowry who announced his resignation in September. Lowry’s three-decade directorship was the longest in the museum’s history.

Cherix was appointed unanimously by the museum’s board of trustees.

‘Christophe’s brilliant curatorial leadership in modern and contemporary art, strong relationships with artists, excellence in scholarship, internationally respected research and publications, and reputation for steady stewardship stood out as indispensable qualities to position the museum to meet the moment,’ wrote museum chair Marie-Josée Kravis and museum president Sarah Arison in a letter, via the New York Times

Born in Switzerland, Cherix obtained a license ès lettres from the University of Geneva before becoming curator of the print department at the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva. He joined MoMA in 2007 as curator in the department of prints and illustrated books, and was a fellow of the class of 2010 at the Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York. In 2013, Cherix was appointed The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints. He has curated numerous exhibitions including Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960–1971 (with Klaus Biesenbach, 2015); Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Institutions, 1965–2016 (with Connie Butler and David Platzker, 2018) and Betye Saar: Legends of Black Girl’s Window (with Esther Adler, 2019).

Cherix will begin his role in September.
