The City of Copenhagen is launching a contemporary art triennial. Its first edition will be held in 2027.

The initiative follows a 2023 decision from the City of Copenhagen to allocate DKK 50 million to a new major art event. The Triennial Association was created, with the city as co-founder, and has appointed the Copenhagen-based art agency Creator Projects as artistic director of the triennial. The agency is behind several major commissions and exhibitions in Denmark including Alicja Kwade’s site-specific Matter of Void (2025) in Horsens, Alexander Tovborg at Kunsthal Charlottenborg (2023) and Pierre Huygue at Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA).

The Nordic region is currently experiencing strong momentum, and we sense growing interest both nationally and internationally in the role of art in regional communities and in the art being produced in the Nordic countries. We look forward to collaborating with artists, institutions and other cultural actors to create a major celebration of art in Copenhagen’, said Simon Friese, director of Creator Projects, in a statement.
