The sixth edition of the New Museum Triennial will take place from 4 February to 16 May, the New Museum has announced. It will be the first since the museum’s reopening in March, following two years of construction on its expansion.
The 2026 triennial, cocurated by New Museum curator Vivian Crockett and Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) curator Isabella Rjeille, will be titled The Outside Expands. The title is partly inspired by a 1979 intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3, where the group taped Xs across the entrance of several São Paulo galleries accompanied by the message ‘What is inside remains, what is outside expands’, to encourage cultural workers to think beyond institutions. The triennial will put forward artists that question structural logics and destabilise notions of fixed territory and identity.
