On 14 March, Perrotin opened Outposts by the artist JR, the inaugural exhibition of the gallery’s brand new space on Brook Mews in London.
The exhibition, on view through 3 May, comprises two of JR’s recent, ongoing projects: Déplacé·e·s and Children of Ouranos. Déplacé·e·s was first conceived with refugee populations in Ukraine, Rwanda, Mauritania, Greece and Colombia, where aerial photographs capture giant banners depicting the full-body images of young children playfully running. Building on that model but minimising the scale, Children of Ouranos explores the tensions between the visible and the invisible in white silhouettes on black-painted wood panels.
ArtReview Editor-in-Chief Mark Rappolt sat down with the artist to discuss his trajectory from the street to the gallery space, artmaking and carceral systems, and the future.
