Reuben Keehan has been named artistic director of Kontempo, a forthcoming contemporary art centre in Manila, the Ayala Foundation has announced.
Reuben Keehan has been curator of contemporary Asian art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) since 2011. Throughout his time, he has been closely involved with the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art.
‘The Philippines has long been a vital and dynamic force within contemporary art and culture in the region, and the idea of Kontempo as a connective hub that brings artists and audiences together, encourages dialogue across disciplines, and links the Philippines with the wider world is what drew me to this project,’ said Keehan in a statement. ‘I am excited to work with communities, stakeholders, and future partners in the Philippines and beyond to shape an institution that is responsive, open, and meaningfully engaged with its context.’
With the support of the Ayala Foundation, Kontempo – Center for Contemporary Art will comprise three gallery spaces and an outdoor space for art installations and public use. It will form part of the Circuit Makati estate, an area that formerly housed a horse racing track and is currently being redeveloped into a cultural district by the Ayala Land real estate company.
