Asia Art Archive (AAA)’s annual fundraiser returns on 22 October, with more than 50 works – from around the world, generously donated by artists, galleries and private individuals – up for auction online and in person. Proceeds will support AAA’s ongoing work to preserve and share contemporary art-histories in Asia, while strengthening the knowledge, resources and capacity needed to ensure that these histories remain accessible for generations to come.

Highlights from this year’s auction include work by Salima Hashmi, Chen Qingqing, Christopher K. Ho, Donny Cheng, Huang Rui, Mok Yat-san, Qiu Xiaofei, Ashmina Ranjit, Anju Dodiya, Jakkai Siributr, Wong Sze Wai, Xu Bing, Young-Hae Chang, Heavy Industries, Yu Peng, and more.

Dony Cheng, Pearl on Orbit, 2026, acrylic, charcoal, and soft pastel on canvas, 25 × 35 × 4 cm. Generously donated by the artist and Gallery Exit

AAA is a Hong Kong-based independent non-profit organisation ‘initiated in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region’. With an archive of over 140,000 records, AAA has one of the most valuable collections of material on art, freely available on its website and in its onsite library. The organisation’s ethos centres on expanding knowledge through research, residency and educational programmes.

And rarely more so than in this, the Archive’s 25th anniversary year. In August, AAA launched the Archiving Handbook, a practical guide designed to support artists and art spaces in preserving their own creative legacies. Introducing fundamental archival principles and workflows, the handbook builds on seven hands-on Archiving Workshops held in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Riyadh and Ho Chi Minh City. These workshops brought together practical exercises and discussions spanning technical applications and theoretical approaches. The handbook is now freely available online for independent exploration.

This year has also seen the initiation of a two-year project New Archive: Hong Kong at the Forefront of Preserving Arts and Culture, which will extend AAA’s role as a platform for professional training, research, technological experimentation and knowledge exchange in digital archiving. Through internships, on-the-job training, international exchanges, expert-led workshops, and educational resources, the initiative will prepare a new generation of archivists and cultural professionals for preservation in the digital age. The New Archive project is supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme.
