The LOEWE Foundation/Studio Voltaire Award – founded in 2021 – has announced the seven winners of the 2023-2025 edition. Each will each receive a bursary of GBP£5,000 in addition to a rent-free workspace, and professional support provided by Studio Voltaire in their south London facilities for the award’s two-year duration.
Selected from over 600 applications were drawing-based artist Babajide Brian; filmmaker, writer and performance artist Maz Murray; Emily Pope, a visual artist working most recently with broadcast media; Shamica Ruddock, a research artist working with sound and moving image; Meera Shakti Osborne, an artist and youth worker with an interest in collective practice; video, image and installation artist Nick Smith; and photographer, filmmaker and printmaker Ossie Williams.
The award seeks to support under-represented artists working in the UK and address a lack of affordable studio spaces in London. ‘As the cost of living crisis intensifies and has an increasingly adverse effect on artists, it was no surprise that we received such a high volume of strong applications. The level of need amongst artists is more pronounced than ever’, said Maggie Matić, curator at Studio Voltaire and panellist for this year’s award.
The winners will take up their workspaces at Studio Voltaire in September 2023.
