Museion – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Bolzano and the Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation has announced Monia Ben Hamouda as the winner of the 2024 VG Foundation Prize.
Established in 1983 upon the will of Ilse Engelina Vordemberge (1906–1981), the VG Foundation Prize annually awards CHF60,000 to one European artist up to the age of 35 to ‘live and work for one year absolutely free from care’. Previous recipients include Martina-Sofie Wildberger, Diana Lelonek, Annika Kahrs and Lawrence Lek.
Currently working between al-Qayrawan and Milan, Ben Hamouda (b.1991) graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Milan and has held visiting professorship at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden. Her work, informed by calligraphy, explores her connections to her familial line and ancestry through what she calls a shamanistic process. Her installations Resisting (Aniconism as Figuration Urgency) and About Telepathy and other Violences lI (Aniconism as Figuration Urgency) are currently on view in RENAISSANCE at Museion.
