Zippora Elders Tahalele has been appointed general and artistic director of Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, the museum has announced. She will begin her role on 13 April.
The museum’s previous director, Birgit Donker, was fired last July following an investigation over claims of creating a ‘toxic workplace’. Roderick van der Lee has been acting as interim director.
Elders studied art history and heritage studies, specialising in museum curation, at the University of Amsterdam and the VU University, Amsterdam. She is currently the senior curator at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and was previously head of curatorial department and outreach at Gropius Bau, Berlin; co-curator of Sonsbeek 20>24, Arnhem; director of Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen and curator at Foam, Amsterdam.
‘Zippora is a figurehead of a new generation that brings renewed leadership to the cultural sector’, said Wanda van Kerkvoorden, chair of the supervisory board, in a statement. ‘With her ambition to work closely with the team and partners to further develop the museum artistically and in its programming, she will help strengthen both the museum’s and Dutch photography’s international presence. We look forward to welcoming her in April to our new home, the Santos warehouse in Rotterdam, and to supporting her and the team in realising that ambition.’
