This morning, French president Emmanuel Macron appointed Christophe Leribault as president of Paris’s Louvre museum. The appointment comes just one day after Laurence des Cars handed her resignation to Macron, which the French president accepted, calling it ‘an act of responsibility’.
Des Cars was appointed president of the Louvre in 2021. The final year of her tenure has been marked by crises including strikes and the theft of €88 million worth of jewels from the museum in October.
Leribault joins the Louvre from his current position as president of the Château de Versailles. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading modernising projects for the Louvre, including the major renovation plans announced early last year that will provide the museum with a new entrance and separate room for the Mona Lisa.
