SFMOMA appoints Eungie Joo as its first contemporary art curator

The recently reopened San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has announced Eungie Joo as curator of contemporary art, a newly created position. Joining the museum in June, Joo will collaborate with the various existing departments of the museum (Painting and Sculpture, Photography, Media Arts) on curating exhibitions and acquiring new works for the collection.

Joo was the curator of Sharjah Biennial 12, The past, the present, the possible, in 2015, and the artistic director of the 5th Anyang Public Art Project, in Anyang, South Korea, which opened in October 2016. She previously served as the Keith Haring director and curator of education and public programs at the New Museum in New York from 2007 to 2012, where she curated the 2012 Triennial, The Ungovernables. In 2012 she became director of art and cultural programmes at Instituto Inhotim in Brazil. Joo is also the founding director and curator of the Gallery at REDCAT in Los Angeles, where she worked from 2003 to 2007.
