The National Gallery of Canada and The Sobey Art Foundation have announced the shortlist of five artists who have been nominated for the 2016 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s major contemporary art prize.
This year’s shortlisted artists were chosen by a jury of five curators from each of Canada’s regions, and include:
Jeremy Shaw (West Coast and Yukon)
Brenda Draney (Prairies and North)
Charles Stankievech (Ontario)
Hajra Waheed (Québec)
William Robinson (Atlantic)
The Sobey Art Award began in 2002 and is annually presented to a Canadian artist under 40 who has exhibited work in a private or public gallery in the 18 months before submitting their application.
The winner of the prize (to be announced in November 2016) will be awarded CAD$50,000 (approx. £25,000), with each of the other shortlisted artists receiving $10,000. The five artists’ works will be shown in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada from 6 October 2016 – 5 February 2017.
