Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, has announced an open call for its second edition of Art Jameel Commissions, which will focus on arts writing and research.
Applications are open to all areas of inquiry, although ‘preference will be given to those who engage with the thematic focuses within Jameel Art Centre’s current programming’. The themes are currently as listed:
Confluence – looking at the UAE as an international meeting place and point of convergence, as well as Jameel Arts Centre’s waterside location on Dubai Creek.
Museology – As a new independent arts institution, the Centre is invested in critically investigating modes of art production and exhibition making.
The GCC – While the scope of its programme is intentionally international, the Centre is also rooted in its local context and includes artists’ works and projects that explore experiences of living and working in the Gulf countries.
Applicants are required to submit:
A 50-word summary of their area of interest
A detailed brief (up to 500 words)
A list of possible interlocutors and collaborators, based in the UAE or internationally, that are relevant to the proposal
A short bibliography relevant to the proposal
A biography of up to 150 words
A one-page CV highlighting relevant experience
Up to 5 samples of previous writing, published or unpublished
Applications are open to art writers, curators, critics, art historians, and artists who:
Have at least five years of professional practice, which includes, for example, writing, exhibitionmaking, publishing or lecturing
Can demonstrate an ability to see a project through to completion. This can be a book, public event, exhibition or otherwise
Can articulate a clear idea of where the proposed project fits within their overall practice
Are of any nationality or age but have links to, and a grasp of, the environmental and cultural nuances of the location and the wider Middle Eastern region
Are able to be based in Dubai for a consecutive 3-month period during the duration of the commission
Desired outcomes of the residency will be:
Published materials, which can take the form of a booklet, magazine, pamphlet or other experimental format – either digital or print. If the final outcome is print, the practitioner will be invited to apply for special funds to support the production of the final product
The organisation of and participation in at least two public events at Jameel Arts Centre in 2019. These can include lectures, seminars, round-tables, workshops or other more experimental forms of event making
To share the research process with Centre staff and stakeholders through internal meetings or seminars
To leave a material trace of the research at Jameel Library. This can take the form of a research folder with images and notes, a bibliography, or other forms of documentation, both print and digital
To host an Open Studio for the general public during the timeframe of the commission
To engage with special visitors to Jameel Arts Centre who would like to learn about the residency and meet with the resident
The resident will use Jameel Arts Centre as his/her daily studio to research and produce
Art Jameel will provide:
2,000 USD stipend per month to cover living costs in Dubai for 3 months
Accommodation in Dubai for the 3-month period between September and December 2019
Up to 2 return tickets to Dubai
The cost of the UAE visa and support in the visa application process where needed
Up to 3,000 USD for research
Dedicated budget for the proposed public programmes [Budget to be administered at the discretion of Jameel Arts Centre programming team]
The selected writer may apply for special funds to produce a printed outcome related to the residency. [Budget to be administered by Art Jameel]
Proposals must be submitted in English, through writing and research during the residency may be conducted in English or Arabic.
