Cecilia Alemani has been appointed as the artistic director of the 2021 Venice Biennale. The director and chief curator of New York’s High Line Art, Alemani has also curated major exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate Modern in London, organised the Italian Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale and was artistic director of the Art Basel Cities program in Buenos Aires in 2018.
Alemani is the first Italian woman to hold the position, and only the fifth woman of any nationality in 59 editions of the exhibition (she follows María de Corral and Rosa Martinez, who shared the role in 2005, Bice Curiger in 2011 and Christine Macel in 2017). In a press release issued by the Biennale, she promised to use the opportunity ‘to give voice to artists to create unique projects that reflect their visions and our society’.
