Tributes fill the media after the death was announced of iconic rockstar David Bowie, aged 69, only a few days after the release of his album ‘Blackstar’. In his almost 50-year career the androgynous singer and musician, who died after an eighteen-month battle against cancer, remained hugely influential, in part due to his constant innovation and reinvention of himself both musically and physically, including alter egos like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. Born David Jones, Bowie’s hits include ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Starman’, ‘Let’s Dance”, ‘Rebel, Rebel’ and ‘Life on Mars’. Bowie was also a music producer, an actor (first appearing in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth,1976) and an artist. The exhibition charting his career, David Bowie Is… which opened at the V&A in 2013, in celebration of his legacy as a style icon as well as a musician and performer, was one of the museum’s most visited exhibitions. The exhibition is still touring and can be seen until 13 March at the Groninger Museum, the Netherlands.
