Pierre Huyghe, artistic director of the 2019 Okayama Art Summit, has announced the participants for this second edition, taking place in Okoyama, Japan, from 27 September to 24 November. If the inaugural edition, curated by Liam Gillick in 2016, counted only 30 artists (including Huyghe himself), this year’s selection is even more concentrated, focussing on the following 19 artists:
Tarek Atoui, Matthew Barney, Etienne Chambaud, Paul Chan, Ian Cheng, Melissa Dubbin & Aaron S. Davidson, John Gerrard, Fabien Giraud & Raphaël Siboni, Glass Bead, Elizabeth Hénaff , Eva L’Hoest, Fernando Ortega, Sean Raspet, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Pamela Rosenkranz, Tino Sehgal, Mika Tajima
Under the title IF THE SNAKE, this edition of the biennial festival promises to be as complex and shapeshifting as Huyghe’s own work, though the at this time information on the structure or concept around the exhibition remains quite evasive, promising an exhibition as ‘a living entity, through which navigate heterogeneous things, chemical and algorithmic processes, as well as different intelligent life forms’.
