Pioneering American performance artist and sculptor Chris Burden has died at his home in Topanga Canyon, California aged 79. The artist had been suffering from cancer. Burden initially rose to notoriety for his 1971 performance piece Shoot, for which he had himself shot in the arm by a rifle, but later gained acclaim for his large-scale sculptural works, an obituary in the LA Times reports.
Burden’s final sculpture, a homage to Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, will be shown for a month at LACMA from 18 May.
