Turkish artist Cengiz Çekil has died. Born in 1945 Çekil studied at the Department of Painting and Handicrafts at the Ankara Gazi Institute of Education and completed his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which he attended on a state scholarship. His works have been exhibited in at Mechelen, Belgium, MoMA, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, MAK in Vienna, and in the 4th and 11th Istanbul Biennials and Manifesta 5. In 2011, MoMA acquired Diary, a 1976 notebook on which the artist stamped ‘I am still alive today’ along with the date, as a response to the tense and violent political climate that tore Turkey apart at the time.
