Theaster Gates has won the 2017 Kurt Schwitters Prize, The Art Newspaper reports. The Chicago-based artist was chosen by the jury for his socio-political ‘urban projects’ which include the Dorchester Projects, aimed at rebuilding his South Side neighbourhood; elements of the project were then shipped to Kassel in Germany to repair the historic Huguenot House. The Kurt Schwitters Award will culminate in Gates’s first solo exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, opening in late 2017.
