Gareth Nyandoro has won the FT/Oppenheimerfunds Emerging Voices 2016 Art Award for his ‘vivid, abstract depictions of commercial life in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital’. In 2015, Nyandoro completed a Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten residency, Amsterdam, and in February this year held his first UK solo exhibition at Tiwani Contemporary in London. The runners-up for the Art Award were Palestinian artist Noor Abuarafeh and Kenyan-German multimedia artist Syowia Kyambi.
Emerging Voices awards are judged across three categories from different geographic regions: art (Africa/Middle East), film (Latin America/ Caribbean) and literary fiction (Asia-Pacific). The panel of judges, who range from artists and curators, to institutional directors and academics, choose the award winners based on works that best reflect outstanding talent and which also furthers our understanding of their region. This year, each winner received just over £32,000 ($40,000).
