The Maria Lassnig Foundation has announced Glasgow-based artist Cathy Wilkes as the winner of its new art prize, established in June 2016 to celebrate the work of midcareer artists. She will receive €50,000 (approx. £43,600), as well as a solo show at MOMA PS1 in Autumn 2017.
The biennial prize, originally conceived by the late Lassnig before her death in 2014, will partner with a different institution for each edition to will host and curate a solo show by the winner. Wilkes was selected by a jury of seven including: MOMA PS1 curator Peter Eleey; Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi, president of the Sharjah Art Foundation; Laura Hoptman, painting and sculpture curator at MoMA; artist Zoe Leonard; Matthias Mühling, director of Lenbachhaus; curator Hans Ulrich Obrist; and Peter Pakesch, Maria Lassnig Foundation chairman.
