The Drawing Room, Equator Art Projects, Space Cottonseed, Tomio Koyama Gallery and Silverlens have all announced that they will not be renewing their leases at Singapore’s government backed Gillman Barracks art ‘hub’, the Straits Times has reported.
Opened in 2012 in a former British army barracks, Gillman Barracks is said not to have attracted the expected footfall or sales for the galleries (of which there are 17 in total). Critics have cited the area’s lack of accessibility and refreshment outlets and initial lack of signage. Other galleries have however renewed their leases, saying that the area needs more time to build up visitors and its reputation.
