The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead in the the northeast of England is to host a new international award for artists. The biennial award will ask four globally recognised artists to each select one artist (either at an early stage in their career or underecognised) who they feel deserving of more attention. Each selected artist will receive £25,000 to create a new work plus a £5,000 fee. The intention of the award is to nurture talent and promote relationships between artists and themselves and between artists, institutions and their publics.
The four artist-selectors for the the first iteration of the award are Monica Bonvicini, Mike Nelson, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Lorna Simpson. They will announce their chosen artists in the new year. The works created by the artists will be seen in an exhibition at Baltic opening on 30 June 2017.
