The curator of next year’s Korean Pavilion at Venice Biennale, Hyunjin Kim, has announced the selection of three women artists who will present projects based on ‘women and gender-diversified narratives that interrupt, break away from, and reconstruct previous understandings of modernization in the region of East Asia,’ reports ArtAsiaPacific. Hwayeon Nam, Siren Eun Young Jung and Jane Jin Kaisen were chosen by Kim, who was selected by Arts Council Korea to curate the pavilion for her proposal which ‘showed potential to deconstruct and challenge dominant ideological narratives, highlighting regional history and archives through universal themes of tradition versus modernity, gender and sexuality’.
Berlin- and Seoul-based performance, video and sound artist Hwayeon Nam examines social systems through multimedia installations; Jane Jin Kaisen is a filmmaker and artist currently living in Berlin, whose work is narrative-based and focuses on transnational identities and histories; and Siren Eun Young Jung, who has recently won the 2018 Korea Artist Prize (and whose work is currently on show at MMCA Seoul), traces forgotten narratives surrounding the Korean all-female theatre genre of Yeoseong Gukgeuk – and through this, further explores queer artistic practices and identity politics.
