Ralph Rugoff appointed curator of the 58th Venice Biennale

The Board of La Biennale di Venezia today announced that it has approved the appointment of curator Ralph Rugoff as director of the Visual Arts Sector of La Biennale. The director is responsible for the curating the 58th International Art Exhibition, which will be held from 11 May – 24 November 2019. 

Ralph Rugoff is a curator and has been director of the Hayward Gallery of London since 2006.  A former Director (2000-06) of San Francisco’s CCA Wattis Institute, he has curated numerous group shows at the Hayward Gallery over the past 11 years, including The Painting of Modern Life (2007), and Psycho Buildings (2008), an exhibition that included installations by artists such as Mike Nelson, Gelitin and Do-ho Suh.

The Hayward has been closed since September 2015 for major refurbishment, set to reopen in January 2018. In the interim, Rugoff was the Artistic Director of the XIII Biennale de Lyon in 2015 titled La vie moderne, while staging The Infinite Mix, a large off-site exhibition of video work in London, during 2016.

Between 1985 and 2002 Rugoff wrote art and cultural criticism for numerous periodicals, publishing in art magazines and newspapers, including Artforum, Parkett, The Los Angeles Times, The Financial Times and The Los Angeles Weekly.
