Helen Legg has been appointed director of Tate Liverpool. Legg, who is currently director of Spike Island in Bristol, will take up the position in the summer. She replaces Francesco Manacorda who joined Moscow’s V-A-C Foundation last year.
Legg joined Spike Island in 2010 and has overseen exhibitions by Hedwig Houben, Anthony McCall, Haroon Mirza, Tatzu Nishi, Laure Prouvost, Cally Spooner and Gillian Wearing among others. From 2005 to 2010 was curator at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, where she was involved in the development of Ikon, Eastside, based in a former factory building in Digbeth, an industrial area of the city. Legg was part of the selection committee for the British representations at the Venice Biennale 2017 and a judge for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2017. In 2014 she was a judge for the Turner Prize and the Contemporary Art Society’s Museums Award and in 2014 was a selector for the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Artist’s Awards.
