Jeffrey Shaw has been awarded the Golden Nica for Visionary Pioneers of Media Art. The award is part of the 2015 Prix Ars Electronica, which honours figures working in media arts with prize money ranging up to €10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their work at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.
Shaw has been a leading figure in new media art and technologies since the 1960s, experimenting in the fields of expanded cinema, virtual and augmented reality, immersive visualisation environments, navigable cinematic systems and interactive narrative. Having exhibited internationally, Shaw is also the founding director of the ZKM Institute for Visual Media, Karlsruhe, and the UNSW iCinemaResearch Centre, Sydney, as well as dean of the CityU School of Creative Media, Hong Kong.
