Flowers Gallery has announced that British painter Richard Smith died on 16 April 2016 at the age of 84. He was known for his position in the avant-garde scene in 1960s London. Although not affiliated with the Pop art movement, Smith combined the consumer packaging aesthetic with his own abstract painterly style, and challenged the boundaries of traditional painting through his three-dimensional canvas sculptures.
His work is held in the public collections of the Arts Council of Great Britain; The British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Whitney, New York; MIT, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.
