The National Gallery have announced that Gabriele Finaldi has been appointed as their new director, taking over from Nicholas Penny, who announced his retirement last year. Born in London, Finaldi studied art history at Dulwich College and the Courtauld and is currently deputy director for collections and research at the Prado in Madrid. Before taking up his post at the Prado Finaldi was the National Gallery’s curator of Italian and Spanish aintings, from 1992 to 2002.
Finaldi will take up his new position in August.
