The Whitney Biennial has announced its full list of participating artists for the 2017 edition – the first to take place in the museum’s new downtown location. The 63 participants range from emerging to well-established artists and collectives working across media, including Samara Golden, Rafa Esparza, Jon Kessler, An-My Lê, Leigh Ledare, Frances Stark and Anicka Yi, among others.
Curated by Christopher Y. Lew and Mia Locks, the 2017 exhibition will focus on the formation of the self and the individual’s place in a turbulent society, most particularly in the context of this election year. ‘Against this backdrop, many of the participating artists are asking probing questions about the self and the social, and where these intersect’, Locks said in a statement.
