Nari Ward has been announced as the winner of the 2017 Vilcek prize in the arts category, receiving $100,000. Every year, the New York-based Vilcek Foundation awards prizes that honour immigrants who have made lasting contributions to American society through their achievements in biomedical research and the arts and humanities. Ward was selected for a body of found-object assemblage artwork that ‘invites both a public discourse and an intimate dialogue with viewers on topics such as race, poverty, immigration, and the Caribbean diaspora identity.’
Iman Issa, Meleko Mokgosi and Carlos Motta were awarded the prize for Creative Promise in Fine Arts, each receiving a $50,000-cash prize.
