Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art in Gateshead has announced the four winners of the inaugural edition of its art award. The prize, awarded every two years, asks four established artists to select an artist they feel deserves more attention. Each nominated artist receives a £25,000-cash prize towards the creation of new work, as well as a £5,000 fee.
This year’s winners, and their selectors, are:
Jose Dávila, selected by Pedro Cabrito Reis
Eric N. Mack, selected by Lorna Simpson
Toni Schmale, selected by Monica Bonvicini
Shen Xin, selected by Mike Nelson
Each artist will have a solo presentation as part of an exhibition at Baltic, opening on 30 June 2017. Visitors will be able to vote for their favourite presentation, resulting in an additional legacy commission project involving the artist and local communities in Gateshead, to be announced in Autumn 2018.
