Jeremy Shaw, representing the West Coast & Yukon region, has been announced as the winner of the 2016 Sobey Art Award at a ceremony at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. The £30,000-cash prize is awarded every year by the Sobey Art Foundation to a Canadian artist under 40, selected from a shortlist of five artists, each representing one of the five regions in Canada. This year’s finalists, who each receive a £6,000 prize, included: Brenda Draney (Prairies and Northern Canada); Charles Stankievech (Ontario); Hajra Waheed (Québec); and William Robinson (Atlantic).

Jeremy Shaw’s work, alongside that of the other shortlisted artists, is on display in the 2016 Sobey Art Award exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada through 5 February 2017.
