Stefan Kalmár, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London, has announced the appointment of Richard Birkett as Chief Curator, while current Head of Programme Katharine Stout is to become Deputy Director.
Richard Birkett returns to the ICA as Chief Curator in May. Between 2007 and 2010 Birkett was curator at the ICA, before joining Kalmár as curator at Artists Space, New York. Birkett previously co-ran the artist-led Whitechapel Project Space, London. At Artists Space, he co-curated exhibitions with artists such as Bernadette Corporation, Lukas Duwenhögger, Laura Poitras and Cameron Rowland. At the ICA he conceived and curated the exhibition series Nought to Sixty (2008), and co-curated Talk Show (2009), Calling Out of Context (2009) and Chto Delat?: The Urgent Need to Struggle (2010).
Katharine Stout, Head of Programme at the ICA since 2013, starts her new role on 1 April. As Head of Programme, Stout has led the work of the ICA’s curatorial team and overseen the ICA’s programmes. For the ICA she curated exhibitions of Richard Hamilton, Tauba Auerbach, Hito Steyerl, Prem Sahib, Betty Woodman and Sonia Boyce.
