Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, has announced Diedrick Brackens as the winner of the 2018 Joyce Alexander Wein Prize, a $50,000 (approx. £39,000) award supporting the achievements of African American artists.
Texas-born, Los Angeles-based Brackens creates tapestries drawing on various traditions and techniques from Europe America and Africa, which deal with questions of identity, notably sexuality and race. His work has been featured in institutions including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, and the Berkeley Art Museum in California.
