The 10th Berlin Biennale, titled We don’t need another hero, has announced its artist list. The biennale, which this year is curated by Gabi Ngcobo (supported by a curatorial team composed of Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Yvette Mutumba) and directed by Gabriele Horn, presents itself as a ‘conversation’ focusing on ‘major geopolitical shifts that brought about regime changes and new historical figures’. Rejecting the idea of a ‘saviour’, the biennale explores acts of self-preservation and resistance against hegemonic knowledge systems including historical narratives. The biennale’s proposal states: ‘We are interested in different configurations of knowledge and power that enable contradictions and complications.’
The four permanent locations for the Berlin Biennale are Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Volksbühne Pavilion and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics. Public events will be held at these sites as well as various locations around the city.
The 2018 Berlin Biennale will be on from 9 June – 9 September 2018
