The Bank of England is inviting the British public to vote for a visual artist or designer to appear on the back of the next £20 note. Participants have until 19 July to nominate a dead, non-fictional visual artist, including fashion designers and filmmakers, who has contributed to the ‘shaping of British thought, innovation, leadership, values, and society’.

Favourites so far include LS Lowry, Constable, JMW Turner, Alfred Hitchcock and Barbara Hepworth.

A panel of experts will draw up a shortlist of eight, which will be tested by focus groups and then reduced to three or four names from which the winner will be chosen by the governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, to be announced in Spring 2016.
